Who’s hiring
By sector, IT software and services posted 37% of AI jobs in 2025, banking, financial services and insurance 15.8%, and manufacturing 6%; AI hiring in BFSI grew 41%. Large enterprises and multinationals posted 49% of AI roles, mid-sized firms 28% and startups 23%.1
Global capability centres (GCCs), the in-house technology centres of global companies, are a big part of it. India has 2,117 GCCs employing 2.36 million people,9 and nearly half of them report that more than 25% of their open roles now require AI capability.10
Where
Bengaluru and Hyderabad lead India in the share of job postings that ask for AI.5 It is spreading: LinkedIn found AI engineering hiring up 51% in Hyderabad and 45.5% in Vijayawada,7 and Naukri counted more than 1,500 AI jobs from Indore, Coimbatore, Kochi and Ahmedabad in April–June 2025 alone.11
The roles, and what each does
Five roles cover most GenAI jobs in India: GenAI (or LLM) Engineer, AI Engineer, ML Engineer, MLOps or LLMOps Engineer, and Applied Scientist. Taggd lists the same family, with Prompt Engineer and AI Governance Specialist, among the AI roles GCCs hire for.10
Three terms in every job post. A large language model (LLM) is an AI model trained on huge amounts of text to read and write language, such as GPT, Claude, Gemini or Llama. RAG (retrieval-augmented generation) is a way of making an LLM answer from your own documents: it finds the relevant passages first, then answers from them, with citations. An AI agent is an LLM that can take steps on its own, such as running a database query or calling an API, to finish a task.
GenAI or LLM Engineer
A GenAI engineer builds products on large language models: an assistant that answers from a company’s documents, a tool that reads invoices, a support bot that can look up an order. A typical week means choosing a model, writing prompts and tool definitions, building retrieval over company data, testing answers against an evaluation set and shipping the result behind an API.
AI Engineer
An AI Engineer puts AI into products end to end: LLMs, but also vision, speech and classic models. The role leans further into software engineering, with APIs, the cloud and the reliability of the whole system. It is the title LinkedIn put among India’s top three Jobs on the Rise for 2026.2
ML Engineer
An ML Engineer trains and deploys machine learning models, such as fraud scores, recommendations and demand forecasts. Expect more statistics and data work than in a GenAI role, with tools such as scikit-learn, XGBoost and PyTorch. The foundations carry straight over to GenAI work.
MLOps or LLMOps Engineer
MLOps is the work of running models in production, and LLMOps is its version for language models: deploying them, tracing and monitoring their answers, controlling cost and speed, and automating tests and releases. It suits people coming from DevOps, cloud or backend roles.
Applied Scientist
The most research-heavy of the five: designing and testing new modelling approaches, from fine-tuning methods to new ways of evaluating models, then getting them into products. Taggd lists it among the roles GCCs hire for.10
Is “prompt engineer” a real job?
As a skill, yes. As a stand-alone job title, it is rarely well paid. LinkedIn put Prompt Engineer in its top three Jobs on the Rise in India for 2026,2 but on AmbitionBox the title averages ₹6.3 lakh a year (₹5.9–6.6 lakh typical, 353 salaries), and its average fell 4% over the last two years.4
Where the title pays more, it sits beside engineering: Taggd puts entry roles (1–3 years) in GCCs for GenAI engineers, prompt engineers and MLOps engineers together at ₹12–25 LPA, a band it calls indicative.10
So learn it as part of AI engineering. Prompt and context engineering is the craft of deciding what an LLM sees (instructions, examples, retrieved documents, tool results) and measuring whether it then answers well. In practice that means system prompts, evaluation sets, LLM-as-judge tests and guardrails against prompt injection, not clever wording alone.
What GenAI roles pay
With 1–3 years’ experience, AmbitionBox shows Gen AI Engineers at ₹7.1–8.1 lakh a year and AI Engineers at ₹10.4–11.5 lakh. Reports that look at AI-core roles across the market land higher.
| Role | Experience | Yearly pay | Source |
|---|---|---|---|

Why does the Gen AI title show less than AI Engineer? On AmbitionBox, 370 of its 567 salaries come from IT services and consulting, where it shows ₹7.9–8.9 lakh, and nearly all come from people with under six years’ experience.4 TeamLease Digital, which looks at AI-core roles across the market, says GenAI, ML and data science roles reach ₹31–35 LPA by 6–8 years.3
The premium for AI skills is broad: Naukri found median salaries 53% higher for AI-skilled roles than for others.11 For every source side by side, with cities and employer types, read our AI/ML Engineer salary guide.
Skills and tools
Python first, then the LLM stack: model APIs, retrieval, evaluation, agents and deployment. Python featured in nearly three-quarters of AI job posts in 2025, and SQL and data-engineering skills in more than half.1
| Skill area | What you should be able to do | Tools you’ll see | Modules |
|---|---|---|---|
| Python and data | Clean data, call APIs, write a small service | Python, pandas, SQL, FastAPI | 1, 3, 4, 8 |
| ML and deep learning | Explain how models learn: tokens, embeddings, attention | scikit-learn, PyTorch, Hugging Face Transformers | 5, 6, 7 |
| LLM APIs and open models | Call closed and open models, get structured output, use tool calling | OpenAI API, Anthropic Claude, Google Gemini, Ollama, LiteLLM | 5, 7, 8 |
| Prompt and context engineering | Write prompts, then measure them with evaluation sets and guardrails | DSPy, promptfoo, DeepEval, Guardrails AI | 8 |
| RAG | Chunk and embed documents, store them, retrieve with citations | FAISS, Chroma, pgvector, Qdrant, LlamaIndex, LangChain | 5, 8, then 9 |
| Fine-tuning | Choose between prompting, RAG and fine-tuning; fine-tune a small model with LoRA | PEFT, TRL, Unsloth | 9 |
| LLMOps | Serve models, trace answers, control cost, automate releases | vLLM, Docker, Kubernetes, Langfuse, MLflow, GitHub Actions | 9 |
| Agents | Build agents that use tools, MCP servers and other agents | MCP, LangGraph, CrewAI, OpenAI Agents SDK | 5, 8, 10 |
Modules 1 to 7 are on every plan, Module 8 on Plus and Infinity, Modules 9 and 10 on Infinity. Module 5 gives a first look at the OpenAI API, RAG and agents. See Modules 7 to 10, week by week.
Two terms from the table: MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard for connecting AI models to tools and data, and LoRA is a way of fine-tuning a model by training a small set of extra weights instead of the whole model.
How to get in
Build on what you already have. Analysts and data scientists add LLM engineering; software people add data and machine learning foundations; freshers build both. Everyone proves it with two or three projects that run: 40% of employers prefer demonstrable AI skills or certifications over degrees.13
From analytics or data science
As an analyst or data scientist, you already have Python, SQL and a feel for data quality, which is much of what good retrieval depends on. Add LLM APIs and structured output, retrieval with citations, and evaluation. Your edge is knowing how to check whether an answer is right.
From software, testing or support
You already ship code, so serving and LLMOps will feel familiar, and testers have a head start on evaluation. Add the statistics and machine learning behind the models, then RAG and agents. The direction of travel is clear: in September 2026, AI/ML hiring inside IT grew 11% even as IT hiring overall fell 4%,6 and TeamLease Digital projects pay growth of 16.2% for GenAI developers in FY27–28, against 6.6% for technical support engineers.3
As a fresher
There are entry routes: fresher hiring in AI/ML on Naukri rose 19% in September 2026,6 foundit found 18% of AI jobs in 2025 open to people with 0–3 years’ experience,1 and TeamLease EdTech names AI Application Developer among the most sought-after entry-level roles.14 Start with the data core (Python, SQL, statistics and machine learning), then move to LLMs.
Three projects that show the job
- A RAG assistant on Indian public documents, such as the Income Tax Department’s FAQs, that cites its sources, with an evaluation set of 30 questions and their right answers.
- An agent that answers questions from a SQL database: it writes the query, runs it, draws the chart, and says so when it can’t answer.
- One of them deployed: behind an API, in a Docker container, with tracing, so you can show what it did and what each answer cost.
Our program builds the same three. Module 8 (Plus and Infinity) builds a tax-help assistant on the Income Tax Department’s Acts and FAQs, and teaches turning questions into SQL. Module 9 (Infinity) ships a RAG service with tracing and an automatic test run. See every lab and project.

Questions
What is the salary of a generative AI engineer in India?
On AmbitionBox (17 Oct 2026), Gen AI Engineers earn ₹7.1–8.1 lakh a year with 1–3 years’ experience and ₹10.1–11.3 lakh with 3–6 years. TeamLease Digital puts GenAI Developers at ₹11.2 LPA with 0–2 years, rising to ₹34.5 LPA at 6–8 years.
Can a fresher get a generative AI job in India?
Yes, though fewer roles are open to freshers: foundit found 18% of AI jobs in 2025 were for 0–3 years’ experience, and fresher AI/ML hiring on Naukri rose 19% in September 2026. Show projects that run, with code you can explain.
Is prompt engineering a good career in 2026?
As a skill, yes; as a job title on its own, the pay is modest: ₹6.3 lakh a year on average on AmbitionBox (17 Oct 2026). Learn it as part of AI engineering, alongside retrieval, evaluation and agents.
Do I need a computer science degree for GenAI jobs?
Not always: 40% of employers prefer demonstrable AI skills or certifications over degrees (NASSCOM–Indeed, May 2026). You do need strong Python and the maths behind machine learning, and both can be learnt without a CS degree.
What should I learn first for generative AI?
Python, then statistics and machine learning, then deep learning basics (tokens, embeddings, attention), then LLM APIs, RAG, evaluation and agents, in that order. Skipping the foundations makes the later steps much harder to debug.
Which sectors hire for GenAI roles in India?
IT software and services posted 37% of AI jobs in 2025, then banking, financial services and insurance (15.8%) and manufacturing (6%), according to foundit. Global capability centres hire too: nearly half report that more than 25% of their open roles need AI capability (Taggd).
