Key takeaways
- At 0–1 year, Data Analysts in India earn ₹3.5–5.2 lakh a year on AmbitionBox (as of 16 Oct 2026, on just 30 salaries); PayScale’s average for under a year is ₹4,13,462.12
- Most “per month” figures are CTC divided by 12: AmbitionBox’s ₹34,800 a month for a Junior Data Analyst is its ₹4.2 lakh yearly average ÷ 12, not in-hand pay.3
- In our illustration, a ₹5 LPA CTC pays about ₹35,250 a month in hand before professional tax, once the employer’s PF, variable pay and your own 12% PF are taken out.4
- Under the new tax regime, salaried people earning up to ₹12.75 lakh a year pay no income tax (Government of India, June 2026), so fresher pay is usually free of income tax.5
- The kind of employer moves a first offer most: Junior Data Analysts showed ₹3.7–4.1 lakh in IT services and ₹6.5–7.2 lakh in management consulting (AmbitionBox).3
What does a fresher Data Analyst earn?
Usually ₹3.5–5.2 lakh a year: that’s AmbitionBox’s band for Data Analysts with 0–1 year’s experience.1 PayScale’s average for under a year is ₹4,13,462.2 Here is each figure, and what it comes to a month.

Sources: AmbitionBox (as of 16 Oct 2026),13 PayScale (10 Jul 2026)2 and Indeed (9 Oct 2026).6 A month is the yearly figure ÷ 12, before any deduction.
Two cautions. AmbitionBox’s 0–1 year band rests on only 30 salaries, so treat it as a rough guide; its Junior Data Analyst figure rests on 6,900. And Indeed’s average mixes every level of experience, which is why it’s higher.
For a first job, a fair plan is to expect ₹4–5 lakh a year, and to aim higher with the skills further down this page.
What “per month” really means
A salary “per month” online is usually the yearly CTC divided by 12, and it isn’t what reaches your bank account. CTC, or cost to company, is everything an employer spends on you in a year, including money that never arrives as monthly salary.
Inside a CTC, but not in your monthly pay:
- The employer’s PF contribution. It goes into your provident fund account, not your salary.
- Variable pay or a performance bonus. Paid later, and only if the targets are met.
- Gratuity, insurance and a joining bonus, when an offer counts them in the CTC.
Then, from what is left each month, your own PF, professional tax (where your state levies it) and any income tax are deducted. That’s why two offers with the same CTC can pay quite different amounts each month.
CTC, fixed pay, variable pay and in-hand
Read an offer letter with these six terms, and you’ll know what you’ll actually be paid.
| Term | What it means | In your monthly pay? |
|---|---|---|
| CTC | Cost to company: everything the employer spends on you in a year | No, only part of it |
| Fixed pay | Basic pay plus fixed allowances, such as HRA and special allowance | Yes, before deductions |
| Basic pay | The core of fixed pay; PF is worked out on it | Yes |
| Variable pay | A bonus tied to targets, paid later | Only when it’s paid |
| Employer’s PF | 12% of your basic, paid into your PF account | No |
| In-hand pay | Fixed pay for the month, minus your PF, professional tax and income tax | Yes: this is what you get |
The provident fund (PF) is retirement savings run by the EPFO. You and your employer each contribute 12% of your basic wages plus dearness allowance.4 Since 17 September 2026, PF is compulsory on wages up to ₹25,000 a month, up from ₹15,000, which the EPFO expects to bring more than 51 lakh more employees under compulsory cover.7 Your PF isn’t lost money: it’s your savings, and it earns interest.4
India’s labour codes also set one definition of wages for working out gratuity, pension and social security: basic pay, dearness allowance and retaining allowance, with any allowances above half of your total pay added back.8 That’s why the illustration below keeps basic at half of fixed pay.
A ₹5 LPA offer, worked through
Here is one way a ₹5 lakh CTC can break down. It’s an illustration: every employer splits pay its own way, so read your own offer letter line by line.
| Line in the offer | A year | A month |
|---|---|---|
| Basic pay | ₹2,25,000 | ₹18,750 |
| Fixed allowancesHRA, special allowance | ₹2,25,000 | ₹18,750 |
| Fixed pay | ₹4,50,000 | ₹37,500 |
| Employer’s PF12% of basic | ₹27,000 | ₹2,250Into your PF |
| Variable payIf targets are met | ₹23,000 | Paid later |
| CTC | ₹5,00,000 | ₹41,667On paper only |
An illustration, not any employer’s offer.
And this is what reaches your bank each month:
| Each month | Amount |
|---|---|
| Fixed pay | ₹37,500 |
| Your PF, 12% of basic | −₹2,250 |
| Professional taxWhere your state levies it | A small fixed amount |
| Income taxNew regime | Usually nil at this pay |
| In-hand payBefore professional tax | ₹35,250 |
So in this illustration, a ₹5 LPA offer pays about ₹35,250 a month: roughly 85% of the ₹41,667 that “CTC ÷ 12” suggests. The variable pay arrives later, if it’s earned, and the PF builds up in your account.
Income tax
Income tax depends on the regime you choose and your total income. The new regime is the default; you can choose the old regime, with its deductions, each year when you file your return.9 Under the new regime, individuals earning up to ₹12 lakh a year pay no income tax, and salaried people up to ₹12.75 lakh, with the standard deduction.5 At fresher Data Analyst pay, that usually means no income tax at all; count any other income you have, too.
How we measure pay
When our program checks whether a job clears your minimum salary assured, it looks only at fixed annual pay, not CTC. In the words of our FAQ:
The fixed yearly cash pay in your offer letter: basic pay and fixed allowances. It doesn’t include variable pay or bonuses, joining or retention bonuses, stock or ESOPs, your employer’s PF and gratuity, insurance, reimbursements or benefits in kind.
- Basic pay and fixed allowances
- No bonuses or stock
- No employer PF or gratuity
In writingAgreement 2.1
So in the illustration above, the number that counts is the ₹4,50,000 of fixed pay, not the ₹5,00,000 CTC.
By employer and city
The kind of employer moves a first offer more than the city does. Here are AmbitionBox’s Junior Data Analyst figures by industry, as of 16 October 2026.3
| Employer type | Typical yearly pay | Salaries behind it |
|---|---|---|
| IT services and consulting | ₹3.7–4.1 L | 3,000 |
| Analytics and KPO | ₹4.6–5.1 L | 293 |
| Financial services | ₹4.7–5.8 L | 159 |
| Software product | ₹4.8–5.7 L | 212 |
| Management consulting | ₹6.5–7.2 L | 572 |

Between cities, the gap for Junior Data Analysts is small: Chennai ₹4.1–4.5 lakh, Bengaluru ₹3.9–4.3 lakh, Hyderabad ₹3.8–4.2 lakh, and Pune and Mumbai ₹3.7–4.1 lakh each.3 Across all experience levels, AmbitionBox puts Gurugram highest for Data Analysts (₹7.2–8 lakh), then Bengaluru (₹7–7.7 lakh).1 Indeed shows Bengaluru at ₹7,84,698, against ₹6,30,794 for India as a whole.6
Living costs differ too, so compare a city’s in-hand pay with its rent before you choose between offers.
How to start higher
Three things lift a first offer: skills you can prove, AI on top of them, and knowing the next step up.
Prove the skills employers list
AmbitionBox lists SQL, Excel, data visualisation, Python and Power BI among the top skills for Junior Data Analysts.3 Employers want proof, not claims: in TeamLease EdTech’s survey of 1,097 employers, they expected AI fluency, applied problem-solving and hands-on project experience, with internships, portfolios and real projects gaining weight beside degrees.10 Our Data Analyst roadmap builds one project at each stage. On our program, these skills are Modules 1, 3 and 4 of the 6 core modules, on every plan: Python, then Excel, Power BI and pandas, then SQL.
Add AI to the analysis
Naukri’s AI Jobs Report found AI-skilled median salaries 53% higher, with premiums of up to 56% for freshers (July 2025).11 In foundit’s salary report, AI professionals with 0–3 years earned ₹8.87–15.41 LPA, against ₹2.68–5.08 LPA for entry roles in IT services.12 Demand follows the same line: in September 2026, fresher hiring on Naukri rose 1% on the year, while fresher hiring in AI/ML rose 19%.13 On our program, Modern AI (Module 7) is on every plan, Go included: it covers AI inside Excel and Power BI, and how to check what it gives you.
Know the next step up
Pay rises quickly with experience: AmbitionBox shows Data Analysts at ₹5.2–5.7 lakh with 1–3 years and ₹7.2–7.9 lakh with 3–6 years.1 Titles one rung up pay more from the start: Associate Data Scientists with 0–1 year showed ₹6.5–9.7 lakh, on 67 salaries.14 Our Data Scientist salary guide puts every source for that role side by side.
Compare offers on fixed pay
When an offer arrives, ask for the split before you say yes:
- Fixed pay a year, and what it comes to a month.
- Variable pay: how much, what it depends on, and when it’s paid.
- PF: worked out on what wage.
- Any joining bonus, notice period or service bond, in writing.
Then compare offers on fixed pay a month, after PF. It’s the number you’ll live on. Studying at a college without campus drives? Our off-campus plan covers where to apply.
