Key takeaways

  • Fresher hiring is growing, unevenly: Naukri saw it rise 15% on the year in August 2026 and 1% in September, while fresher hiring in AI/ML rose 19% in September.12
  • 75% of 1,097 employers surveyed by TeamLease EdTech plan to hire freshers in July–December 2026, and they weigh internships, portfolios and real projects alongside degrees.3

  • Jobs are spreading beyond the metros: in August 2026, fresher hiring on Naukri rose 28% in Coimbatore, 24% in Vadodara and 16% in Jaipur.1
  • Never pay to get a job: the government’s National Career Service tells jobseekers not to pay fees to employers, and cyber fraud can be reported on 1930.10

Can you get a Data Analyst job without campus placement?

Yes. Off-campus hiring runs through job portals, company career pages, referrals and internships, and every one of them is open to you from any college. What decides it is whether you can pass the test, show the projects and explain them.

The market is real, and uneven. Naukri saw fresher hiring rise 15% on the year in August 2026, a figure it says should be read with the festive season moving from August last year to September this year, and 1% in September. In September, fresher hiring in AI/ML rose 19%.12 In TeamLease EdTech’s survey of 1,097 employers, 75% intend to hire freshers between July and December 2026, up from 73%, though IT companies’ intent fell from 81% to 76%.3

The gap is job-readiness, not the degree. The India Skills Report 2026 found 56.35% of graduates employable, up from 54.81%,5 and competition is real: urban youth unemployment was 13.6% in 2025.6 The plan below is about proving you’re ready, with work an employer can see.

From our records: of the learners we placed, 24% were freshers, with no work experience. Records on file.

The skills that get you shortlisted

SQL, Excel, a BI tool, Python and basic statistics, plus the habit of using AI and checking what it gives you. AmbitionBox lists SQL, Excel, data visualisation, Python and Power BI among the top skills for Junior Data Analysts.9 TeamLease EdTech found employers, especially in IT and consulting, expecting AI fluency, applied problem-solving and hands-on project experience from freshers.3

SkillWhat a shortlist checksOfficial or open material

Our Data Analyst roadmap puts these in order over about six months, at about 10 hours a week, with a project at each stage.

A portfolio on Indian data

Three finished projects beat ten half-done ones. Build them on Indian public data, so the question is easy for an interviewer to follow and easy for you to talk about.

  1. A dashboard. A one-page Power BI report on a dataset about your own state or city from data.gov.in, India’s open government data platform. End it with three findings in plain words.
  2. A SQL analysis. Load a public dataset into MySQL or PostgreSQL and answer ten business questions, one with a window function. Write each answer in a sentence.
  3. A Python notebook. Clean a messy dataset in pandas, from data.gov.in or Kaggle Datasets, and test one claim with statistics.

Put each one on GitHub with a README: the question, the data and where it came from, what you found and what you’d do next. Pick questions from your own region: a tier-2 city’s data gives you a story other applicants won’t have.

Where off-campus Data Analyst jobs are

In five places, and you should use all five every week: job portals, company career pages, global capability centres, referrals and internships.

WhereWhy it worksHow to use it
Job portalsNaukri, LinkedIn, Indeed and the government’s National Career ServiceThe widest range of openings, filtered by experienceAlerts for Data Analyst, Junior Data Analyst, MIS Analyst and Business Analyst at 0–1 year; apply within a day or two of a posting
Company career pagesStraight to the employer, with no middlemanList 30 employers of analysts in your region and the nearest big city; check their pages weekly
Global capability centres (GCCs)The in-house tech and analytics centres of global companies, many of them in Indian citiesCheck their careers pages for graduate and analyst roles
ReferralsSomeone vouching for you gets your resume readMessage seniors from your college and people from your city, with one project link and the job ID
InternshipsA first line on your resume, and a way inThe AICTE National Internship Portal has an AI and data science stream; prefer paid internships

GCCs are worth a list of their own: NASSCOM counts 2,117 of them in India, employing 2.36 million people.8 In September 2026, Naukri saw GCC hiring rise 4% on the year, led by Hyderabad (+23%), Chennai (+13%) and Pune (+11%).2

You may not have to move to a metro

In June 2026, Naukri saw hiring in emerging cities such as Bhubaneswar rise 21%, Indore 15% and Coimbatore 10%.7 In August, fresher hiring rose 28% in Coimbatore, 24% in Vadodara and 16% in Jaipur.1 By September, Naukri found growth in emerging cities largely flat,2 so cast the net wide: your city, the nearest big city and remote roles. Spotting fake jobs and “pay to get hired” offers

A real employer doesn’t ask you to pay for a job. The government’s National Career Service says it charges no fee at any stage, and that jobseekers should not pay fees to employers.10 Walk away if you see any of these:

  • An employer asking for a fee before you join, called registration, training, a laptop, a uniform or a security deposit.
  • An offer without a real interview, or an interview held only over chat.
  • Pay far above fresher bands for a role with no stated skills.
  • A personal UPI ID or bank account for “processing”.
  • A free email address, or a website that doesn’t match the company’s own.
  • Pressure to decide today, or to share an OTP or your ID documents before a written offer.

Check any offer against the company’s own careers page. If money is taken or someone tries to, report it on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, cybercrime.gov.in, or call 1930, the national cybercrime helpline.11

A course that promises a job is a different question. Before you pay any program, ask these 12 questions and get every answer in writing. Ours are in our terms: you pay only through the checkout on our website, never to a person’s UPI ID, and your registration comes back in full, GST included, when you complete the program.

A weekly application routine

About 10 hours a week, every week, until you’re hired: applications, practice, outreach and review. Steady weeks add up; one frantic weekend doesn’t.

DayWhat to doTime
MondayApply to 5 roles that fit, each with a resume tailored to the post2 h
TuesdayOne timed set of 10 SQL questions1 h
Wednesday3 referral messages and 1 follow-up1 h
ThursdayImprove one project or its README2 h
FridayApply to 5 more roles2 h
SaturdayOne mock interview, recorded or with a friend1 h
SundayUpdate your tracker: what got replies, what to change1 h

Track every application in a sheet: date, company, role, where you found it and the reply. After four weeks you’ll see which channel and which version of your resume get replies, so you can do more of what works.

Interview prep for freshers

Expect a few rounds: an online test, a technical interview on your SQL and projects, a case or business round, and HR. Not every company runs all four, but preparing for each covers you.

RoundWhat it checksHow to prepare
Online testSQL, Excel, basic statistics, often aptitudeTimed practice: 30 SQL questions, PivotTables from memory
Technical interviewYour SQL and Python, explained out loud; your projectsExplain each project in two minutes
Case or business roundTurning a business question into an analysisPractise with the questions behind your projects
HR roundWhy analytics, why this company, joining dateYour story in a minute, and your expected pay ready

On our program, Module 4 takes SQL up to the queries analyst interviews test, and mock interviews with your career counsellor start once you complete.

“Why weren’t you placed on campus?”

Keep it short and forward-looking. Say your college had few data roles on campus, so you built the skills yourself, and point to one project. Then turn to what you can do for them. Nobody needs an apology for your college; they need to see you can do the job.

Questions

Can a tier-3 college student get a data analyst job?

Yes. Off-campus hiring runs on tests, projects and interviews you can prepare for from any college, and the World Economic Forum found 30% of Indian employers rate skills-based hiring as effective. Of the learners we placed, 24% were freshers, with no work experience. Records on file.

Where can freshers find off-campus Data Analyst jobs?

On job portals (Naukri, LinkedIn, Indeed and the government’s National Career Service), company career pages, global capability centres (GCCs), referrals and internships, including the AICTE National Internship Portal. Use all five every week.

How many applications does it take to get a Data Analyst job?

There’s no fixed number. About 10 well-matched applications a week, tracked in a sheet with every reply, is a pace you can keep up and learn from: after four weeks you’ll know which channels and resume versions work.

Is it safe to pay a fee for a job offer?

No. The government’s National Career Service tells jobseekers not to pay fees to employers. Report a fake job or payment fraud at cybercrime.gov.in or on 1930, the national cybercrime helpline.

Do I need an internship to get a Data Analyst job as a fresher?

It helps, but it isn’t the only proof. TeamLease EdTech found employers weighing internships, portfolios and real projects alongside degrees, so three finished projects on public data are the next best thing if you can’t get one.
