Key takeaways
- A switch doesn’t have to mean fresher pay: AmbitionBox shows Data Analysts at ₹3.5–5.2 lakh with 0–1 year, but Associate Data Scientists at ₹8.2–9 lakh and AI Engineers at ₹10.4–11.5 lakh with 1–3 years (October 2026).12
- Experience is in demand: in September 2026, Naukri saw AI/ML hiring for people with 13–16 years’ experience rise 54% on the year, and for 8–12 years 28%.3
- Raises are slow: at Aon’s 9% average increase for 2026, a 35% rise takes about three and a half years of raises, and an 85% rise about seven.4
- The role you move into sets the long-run gap: TeamLease Digital puts a Technical Support Engineer at ₹5.2 LPA rising to ₹14.6 LPA by 6–8 years, against ₹9.1 LPA rising to ₹29.6 LPA for a Data Engineer.5
The short answer
Only if you’re hired into an entry band. Analytics and data science jobs in India are paid by title and experience band, and the title moves pay most: with 1–3 years, the bands below run from ₹5.2 lakh for Data Analysts to ₹12.5 lakh for Data Scientists. The question isn’t whether you’re “new to data”; it’s which title and band an employer hires you into.

Two honest points follow. If you earn more today than the band of the role you’re aiming at, a straight move into an entry analyst job can mean a pay cut. And the higher bands ask for proof that you can do the work, which your projects and your domain can give.
How your experience can count
Your years count most when the new role uses them. An analytics role in the industry you already know turns your domain knowledge into part of the job; one in an unrelated industry asks you to prove almost everything from scratch.
That’s why the best first target is usually an analytics role in your own field:
| If you work in | Analytics roles where your domain counts |
|---|---|
| Accounts, finance or banking | Financial, credit-risk and FP&A analytics; BFSI data teams |
| Sales, marketing or retail | Sales, marketing and e-commerce analytics |
| Customer support or BPO | Customer-experience and operations analytics |
| Software testing or IT support | Data quality, ETL testing, BI support and data engineering |
| Mechanical, civil or manufacturing | Supply-chain, manufacturing and operations analytics |
| Pharma or life sciences | Clinical data and pharmacovigilance analytics |
| Teaching or HR | Education analytics and people analytics |
What the hiring data says
Demand is growing fastest for experienced people. In September 2026, Naukri saw hiring for 8–12 years’ experience rise 5% on the year and 13–16 years rise 7%, while the 4–7 year band fell 2%. In AI/ML roles, hiring for 13–16 years rose 54% and for 8–12 years 28%.3
Employers are also open to proof over paper. In the NASSCOM–Indeed study, 40% of employers preferred demonstrable AI skills or certifications over degrees,6 and the World Economic Forum found 30% of Indian employers rate skills-based hiring (dropping degree requirements) as effective, against 19% worldwide.7
From our records: of the learners we placed, 46% came from a non-tech degree, and 56% joined as Data Scientists or AI/ML Engineers. Records on file.
Make your past work count
- Lead with the data work you already do. MIS reports, Excel models, dashboards and SQL queries are analyst work; put them first on your resume, with numbers.
- Build projects on your own industry’s problems. A loan-default analysis if you’re from banking, a ticket-volume forecast if you’re from support, on public data.
- Ask about an internal move first. An analytics role in your current company keeps your pay history, your tenure and a manager who knows your work.
- Apply to 1–3 year roles, not only “freshers”. Say in one line how your years map to the job.
- Negotiate with the band and its source in hand, and on fixed pay, not CTC. Our fresher salary guide shows how to read an offer’s split.
A raise or a switch: the math
Staying put grows pay slowly; changing role is where the big steps come. Aon’s survey put India’s average salary increase at 9% in 2026, and projected 9.1% for 2027.4 At 9% a year, here is how long raises alone take:
| A rise of | Years of 9% raises | For example |
|---|---|---|
| 35% | About 3.5 years | ₹8 L to ₹10.8 L |
| 50% | Nearly 5 years | ₹6 L to ₹9 L |
| 85% | About 7 years | ₹8 L to ₹14.8 L |
Our arithmetic on Aon’s 9% average, compounded yearly.
The ladder you’re on matters more over time. TeamLease Digital’s salary primer shows how far apart support and data careers drift:5
| Role | 0–2 years | 6–8 years | Projected pay growth, FY27–28 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Technical Support Engineer | ₹5.2 LPA | ₹14.6 LPA | 6.6% |
| Data Engineer | ₹9.1 LPA | ₹29.6 LPA | 12.0% |
| GenAI Developer | ₹11.2 LPA | ₹34.5 LPA | 16.2% |

AI skills widen the gap further: Naukri’s AI Jobs Report found median salaries 53% higher for AI-skilled roles (July 2025).8 So even if a switch starts level with your current pay, the ladder it puts you on can decide where you are in five years. Your minimum salary assured, worked out
On our Data Science & AI Job Guarantee Program, Plus and Infinity set the bar from your own pay, so the fee waits for a job that clears it; on Go it’s ₹6 LPA, whatever you earn today. Enter your fixed annual pay to see yours on each plan.
- GoData Analyst roles₹6 LPA≈ ₹50,000 a month₹6 LPA on Go, whatever you earn today.
- PlusData Scientist roles₹9 LPA≈ ₹75,000 a month₹9 LPA or your salary + 35%, whichever is higher.
- InfinityAI/ML Engineer roles₹12 LPA≈ ₹1,00,000 a month₹12 LPA or your salary + 85%, whichever is higher.
Your minimum salary assured is the lowest fixed annual pay a job must offer before any fee after placement is due: a threshold for the fee, not a promise of any salary. The salary option uses the fixed pay on your last 3 payslips when you complete, if it’s ₹25 LPA or less and you share them. In writing: Agreement 2.3. Nothing you type here is stored or sent.
A few worked examples, from current fixed annual pay:
| Your fixed pay today | Plus: ₹9 LPA or + 35%, whichever is higher | Infinity: ₹12 LPA or + 85%, whichever is higher |

In the words of our FAQ:
The line your job’s pay must clear before anything is due after placement: ₹6 LPA on Go; ₹9 LPA or your salary + 35%, whichever is higher, on Plus; and ₹12 LPA or your salary + 85%, whichever is higher, on Infinity. A job below it never starts the fee. The salary option uses the fixed pay on your last 3 payslips when you complete, if it’s ₹25 LPA or less and you share them.
- Measured on fixed annual pay
- Below it, the fee never starts
- A threshold, not a salary promise

Completing the program means the 6 core modules, 5 capstones in 15 days, the competency test and signing within 30 days (on Infinity, also 75% live-class attendance).
A switch plan that protects your pay
Don’t quit to learn. Build the new skills while you earn, then move when you can prove them. In order:
- Keep your job while you learn. About 10 hours a week is enough: our Data Analyst roadmap takes about six months at that pace. Our program fits around a job too: Go and Plus are self-paced, and Infinity is live on weekends only, Saturday and Sunday, 11 AM to 2 PM IST.
- Pick the role where your domain counts, from the table above, and read ten job posts for it. Note the skills they repeat.
- Build three projects on your industry’s problems, each with a question, clean data, an analysis and a clear answer.
- Keep your last 3 payslips and offer letters together. They prove your current fixed pay when you negotiate.
- Apply to 1–3 year roles as well as entry roles, and track every reply.
- Compare offers on fixed pay a month, after PF, against what you earn now.

Questions
Will I get a fresher salary if I switch to data science?
It depends on the band you’re hired into. AmbitionBox (October 2026) shows ₹3.5–5.2 lakh for Data Analysts at 0–1 year, but ₹8.2–9 lakh for Associate Data Scientists and ₹11.3–12.5 lakh for Data Scientists at 1–3 years. A role where your past work counts gives you the best case for a higher band.
Is it too late to switch to analytics or data science at 30 or 35?
Not on the hiring data. In September 2026, Naukri saw hiring for 8–12 years’ experience up 5% and 13–16 years up 7% on the year, and AI/ML hiring for 13–16 years up 54%. What matters is proving the new skills, ideally on problems from the industry you know.
Does non-IT experience count in an analytics job?
It counts most where the data is about your industry: finance in banking analytics, sales in marketing analytics, support in operations analytics. Of the learners we placed, 46% came from a non-tech degree. Records on file.
How much hike can I expect when I switch to data science?
There’s no standard figure. Aon put India’s average yearly increase at 9% in 2026; a move into analytics or data science is priced on the new role’s band instead, which is why the band you’re hired into matters most.
What does “your salary + 35%, whichever is higher” mean?
It’s the minimum salary assured on our Plus plan: no fee after placement is due until a job pays at least ₹9 LPA or your current fixed pay + 35%, whichever is higher (on Infinity, ₹12 LPA or + 85%, whichever is higher). The salary option uses your last 3 payslips when you complete, if that pay is ₹25 LPA or less. It’s a threshold for the fee, not a promise of any salary.
