From a non-IT job to data analytics: a plan for your background.

You can switch without an IT degree: aim first for an analyst role in the field you already know, and learn Excel, SQL and Power BI before anything else. Here is the plan for seven backgrounds, with what each first role pays and how long the switch really takes.

Key takeaways

  • A non-IT degree is no bar: 46% of the learners we placed came from a non-tech degree. Records on file.
  • Employers are opening up: 30% of employers in India find skills-based hiring effective, against 19% globally (WEF, January 2025).3
  • Your old field is an edge: on AmbitionBox, Data Analysts in financial services earn ₹9.2–10.2 lakh a year, against ₹5.8–6.4 lakh in IT services and consulting (as of 16 Oct 2026).1
  • Learn Excel, SQL and Power BI first, then Python. At about 10 hours a week, plan on about six months, and keep your job while you learn.

Can you switch without an IT degree?

Yes. Data analytics is turning raw records (sales, calls, shipments, patients, marks) into answers a business can act on, and analysts are hired on what they can show: a clean dataset, a clear chart, a query that answers a real question. A degree in commerce, arts, pharmacy or mechanical engineering doesn’t stop you, and your years inside a business count for more than you think.

Employers are moving the same way. In the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs survey, 30% of employers in India found skills-based hiring (dropping degree requirements) effective, against 19% globally.3 In NASSCOM and Indeed’s 2026 study, 40% of employers preferred demonstrable AI skills or certifications over degrees.4 And in our own records, 46% of the learners we placed came from a non-tech degree. Records on file.

The catch is proof. A recruiter reading a B.Com or BPO resume needs a reason to call: projects on real data, ideally from your old field, explained in plain business language. The rest of this guide is about building that.

The three skills to learn first

Excel, SQL and Power BI. Together they cover most of what a first analyst interview tests, and none of them needs you to be a programmer first.

SkillWhat it’s forYou’re ready when
ExcelCleaning and summarising data with PivotTables, lookups and Power Query; most business teams still run on itYou can turn a raw export into a summary table and a chart in 15 minutes
SQLGetting data out of a company’s database yourself, instead of waiting for a reportYou can join three tables and answer “top five products by region, by month”
Power BIThe dashboards managers open every MondayYou’ve published a one-page report someone else can use without you

Python comes fourth. Not every first analyst role needs it, but data science and AI roles do, and it makes the dull parts faster. Our Data Analyst roadmap starts with Python because it leads on to machine learning; if your aim is a first analyst job in your own field, starting with these three works too.

Learn to use AI as you go, and to check it: Indeed found AI mentioned in 39% of data and analytics job postings in India in September 2025.5 Ask an AI assistant to draft a formula or a query, then test every number it gives you.

Your background, your first role

The fastest switch is rarely to a generic “Data Analyst” job. It’s to an analyst role in the business you already know, where your domain is half the interview. Here is the map, then each background in detail.

BackgroundAim for firstYour edge
B.Com, finance, accountsFinancial Analyst, Credit Analyst, MIS in a finance teamYou read a P&L and reconcile numbers already
Sales and marketingSales Analyst, Marketing Analyst, then Business AnalystYou know funnels, targets and campaigns
BPO and customer supportReporting Analyst, MIS Analyst, WFM AnalystYou’ve lived by AHT, CSAT and SLAs
Operations and supply chainSupply Chain Analyst, Operations AnalystYou know where orders get stuck
Mechanical and civil engineeringSupply chain, operations, quality or maintenance analyticsMaths, process thinking, plant and site data
Pharma and healthcareClinical Data Analyst, drug-safety and healthcare analyticsThe rules others take months to learn
TeachingData Analyst in education and edtech, learning analyticsExplaining clearly, which every analyst must do

B.Com, finance and accounts

You already think in ledgers, ratios and reconciliations, and banks, NBFCs and fintechs hire analysts who do. In September 2026, fresher hiring on Naukri grew 14% on the year in banking and financial services.6

  • Aim for: Financial Analyst, Credit Analyst or Risk Analyst roles, or MIS and reporting in a finance team. FP&A (financial planning and analysis) follows with a year’s experience.
  • Learn first: Excel to a high level (Power Query, XLOOKUP, PivotTables), then SQL and Power BI.
  • Build this: a ratio dashboard from five listed companies’ annual reports: margins, debt and working-capital days over five years, with a one-page note on which company you would lend to, and why.
  • Honest timeline: often the shortest path here, because Excel isn’t new to you. Plan on about six months at 10 hours a week; less if you use Excel every day.

Sales and marketing

You know why a campaign worked and why a territory missed its target. Sales and marketing analysts answer exactly those questions, with data instead of instinct.

  • Aim for: Sales Analyst or Marketing Analyst, then Business Analyst, which pays more at the same experience (see the table below).
  • Learn first: Excel, SQL and Power BI. SQL is the new part for most people from sales.
  • Build this: a sales dashboard on Microsoft’s AdventureWorks sample database: revenue by region, product and month, and which customers stopped buying.
  • Honest timeline: about six months. Your edge shows in interviews, where you can talk about targets and customers as someone who has carried them.

BPO and customer support

You’ve worked to dashboards for years: average handle time, first-call resolution, CSAT, SLAs. The people who build those dashboards are analysts, and moving from reading them to making them is the most natural switch in this list.

  • Aim for: Reporting Analyst, MIS Analyst, WFM (workforce management) Analyst or Operations Analyst, then Data Analyst.
  • Learn first: Excel (the MIS team’s main tool), SQL, Power BI.
  • Build this: a complaints dashboard on the US Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s public Consumer Complaint Database: volumes by product and issue, response times, and which issues grow month on month.
  • Honest timeline: about six months. An internal move can come sooner: ask your team lead what the MIS team uses, and offer to help with one report.

Treat MIS as a first step, not the finish. On AmbitionBox, MIS Analysts with 1–3 years earn ₹3.4–3.7 lakh, against ₹5.2–5.7 lakh for Data Analysts.12

Operations and supply chain

You know where orders get stuck, why stock runs out and what a late truck costs. Supply chain analytics is that knowledge, measured.

  • Aim for: Supply Chain Analyst, Operations Analyst, or inventory and demand-planning roles.
  • Learn first: Excel, SQL and Power BI; forecasting in Python later, for demand-planning roles.
  • Build this: a delivery study on the Brazilian E-Commerce Public Dataset by Olist on Kaggle (100,000 orders, 2016–2018): which sellers and regions run late, and what a late delivery does to the review score.
  • Honest timeline: about six months to a first analyst role.

Mechanical and civil engineering

You have the maths, the process thinking and, often, plant or site data. You can go further than most switchers: with Python and machine learning on top, data science roles in manufacturing and infrastructure open up.

  • Aim for: Supply Chain or Operations Analyst, or quality, production and maintenance analytics; later, Data Scientist.
  • Learn first: SQL and Power BI, then Python early: your maths makes statistics and machine learning quicker.
  • Build this: a machine-failure study on the AI4I 2020 Predictive Maintenance Dataset (UCI; 10,000 rows of temperature, torque, speed and tool wear): which conditions come before a failure, and a simple model that flags them.
  • Honest timeline: about six months to analyst roles. Data science needs statistics and machine learning on top, so plan on about 6–8 months (see which role to aim for).

Pharma and healthcare

You know trial phases, adverse events and the regulations around them, things others take months to learn. In September 2026, fresher hiring on Naukri grew 10% on the year in pharma and biotech, and 10% in healthcare.6

  • Aim for: Clinical Data Analyst, drug-safety (pharmacovigilance) analytics, or hospital and healthcare operations analytics.
  • Learn first: Excel and SQL, then statistics and Python: clinical data work leans on statistics.
  • Build this: a drug-safety analysis on the US FDA’s FAERS adverse event data (public domain): which drug and reaction pairs rise quarter on quarter.
  • Honest timeline: about six months. Your degree counts most in clinical data roles, so start there, even where the first pay is modest (see the table below).

Teaching

You explain hard ideas simply, plan in stages and track progress. That’s half of an analyst’s job: telling people what the data says so they act on it.

  • Aim for: Data Analyst roles in education and edtech companies, learning and assessment analytics, then any analyst role.
  • Learn first: Excel, SQL and Power BI.
  • Build this: an early-warning study on the Open University Learning Analytics Dataset (UCI; more than 30,000 students): which signals in online activity and assessments come before a student withdraws.
  • Honest timeline: about six months. If you’re coming back after time away from work, read our guide to restarting after a career gap too.

What the first roles pay

With 1–3 years’ experience, the analyst roles in this guide paid ₹3.4 lakh to ₹8.4 lakh a year on AmbitionBox, and the spread between titles is wide.

Source: AmbitionBox, typical yearly pay by experience, pages updated 14–16 Oct 2026 and read 17 Oct 2026.12 The Data Analyst band for 1–3 years rests on 84,200 salaries; samples under 1,000 are marked.

Three things to take from this:

  • Titles matter. An MIS Analyst and a Business Analyst can do overlapping work, yet AmbitionBox shows ₹3.4–3.7 lakh against ₹7–7.7 lakh at 1–3 years. Take the first door that opens, then move towards the better-paid title.
  • Industry matters. Data Analysts in financial services showed ₹9.2–10.2 lakh, against ₹5.8–6.4 lakh in IT services and consulting.1 If your background is in a well-paying industry, stay in it.
  • Will you restart at fresher pay? If you earn less than these bands today, the switch is a raise. If you earn more, aim for a domain role where your years count, such as Credit Analyst from banking, rather than an entry-level title anywhere. Our guide to switching without a pay reset has the math.

That’s why our Go plan’s bar sits at ₹6 LPA: no fee after placement is due on a job that pays less, so a lower-paid MIS or reporting role never triggers the program fee. For what the next step up pays, see our Data Scientist salary guide.

How long does it take?

Plan on about six months of learning at about 10 hours a week, then the job search. Keep your job while you learn: it pays the bills, and it’s where your domain stories come from.

MonthFocusYou finish with
1–2Excel to analyst level; statistics basicsA clean summary of a messy dataset from your field
3SQLTen business questions answered on a sample database
4Power BIA published one-page dashboard
5Your domain project, and Python basicsOne project an interviewer from your old field would care about
6Resume, interview practice, applicationsA resume that leads with projects, and 20 applications tracked

What slows it down: fewer than six hours a week, skipping projects, and applying only to generic “Data Analyst” titles where your domain doesn’t count. What speeds it up: an internal move into your company’s MIS, reporting or analytics team, and a project that uses the data of the industry you know.

Six months is a plan, not a promise. Some people take longer because of shift work, exams or family. Ten steady hours a week beat thirty hours one week and none the next.

Start this week

  1. Write down three questions from your current job that data could answer, for example “Which branches miss target most often, and in which months?”
  2. Rebuild one report you already use with a PivotTable and Power Query.
  3. Start the MySQL tutorial: create one table and query it.
  4. Pick your project from your background above and download its dataset.
  5. Open our Data Analyst roadmap and tick off the first steps; it keeps your progress in your browser.
  6. Read the stories of learners who started where you are.

Questions

Can I become a data analyst from a non-IT background?

Yes. Analysts are hired on skills they can show: Excel, SQL, a BI tool such as Power BI, and projects on real data. Of the learners we placed, 46% came from a non-tech degree. Records on file.

Do I need coding to switch into data analytics?

Not to start. Excel and Power BI need no code, and SQL is a short query language you can learn in a few weeks. Python helps later, and data science and AI roles need it.

Will I have to start at fresher pay?

Not always. In domain roles your experience counts: on AmbitionBox (read 17 Oct 2026), Credit Analysts with 1–3 years earned ₹7.6–8.4 lakh and Supply Chain Analysts ₹5.6–6.2 lakh. If you earn more than that today, aim for an analyst role in your old domain.

Is 30 or 35 too late to switch to data analytics?

No. Analyst hiring tests skills and proof, and in domain analyst roles your years in the business are an advantage. Plan the switch around your job, at about 10 hours a week.

Which background is easiest to switch from?

Backgrounds that already use Excel every day, such as finance, MIS and operations, usually have the shortest path, because only SQL and a BI tool are new. Every background in this guide has a natural first role.
