Key takeaways
- Fresher hiring is steady and selective: on Naukri it rose 1% on the year in September 2026, while fresher hiring in AI/ML rose 19%.1
- 75% of 1,097 employers surveyed by TeamLease EdTech intend to hire freshers in July–December 2026, and they weigh internships, portfolios and real projects alongside degrees.2
- First titles pay differently: a Junior Data Analyst’s typical pay is ₹3.9–4.4 lakh a year, an Associate Analyst’s ₹4.4–4.8 lakh (AmbitionBox, read 22 Oct 2026).3
- SQL, Excel, Power BI, Python and data visualisation are among the top skills AmbitionBox lists for Data Analysts.3
- Global capability centres are worth a list of their own: India has 2,117 of them, employing 2.36 million people (NASSCOM).4
Do companies hire freshers as Data Analysts?
Yes, steadily, but they choose carefully. Employers pick freshers on skills tests, projects and interviews, and you can prepare for all three from any college.
The numbers show a steady market. Fresher hiring on Naukri rose 1% on the year in September 2026, and fresher hiring in AI/ML rose 19%; in banking and financial services, fresher hiring rose 14%.1 In August it had risen 15%, a figure Naukri says should be read with the festive season moving from August to September this year.5 In TeamLease EdTech’s survey, 75% of employers intend to hire freshers between July and December 2026, up from 73%, though IT companies’ intent fell from 81% to 76%.2
The same survey found employers expecting AI fluency, applied problem-solving and hands-on project experience, with internships, portfolios, assessments and real projects counting alongside degrees.2 TeamLease EdTech’s founder put the shift simply: it’s less about how many freshers are hired, and more about which ones.2 The rest of this guide is about being one of them.
Which job titles should freshers search?
Search six or seven titles, not one. Entry-level analyst work is posted under many names, and pay differs a lot by title.
| Title | What the work is | Yearly pay | Salaries behind it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Data Analyst | Answering business questions with SQL, Excel and dashboards | ₹3.5–5.2 LUnder 1 year | 30A small sample |
| Junior Data Analyst | The same work, with closer supervision | ₹3.9–4.4 LTypical, 0–4 years | 6,900 |
| Associate Analyst | An entry title for analysis and reporting work | ₹4.4–4.8 LTypical, 0–4 years | 28,000 |
| Reporting Analyst | Keeping reports and dashboards accurate and on time | ₹4.6–5.1 L1–3 years | 1,100 |
| MIS Analyst | Regular Excel reports on sales, collections or operations | ₹3.4–3.7 L1–3 years | 3,200 |
| MIS Executive | Building and sending the MIS reports | ₹2.8–3.1 L1–3 years | 22,700 |
| Power BI Developer | Data models, DAX and dashboards | ₹4.7–5.1 L1–3 years | 5,400 |
| Business Intelligence Analyst | Dashboards and analysis for business teams | ₹6.8–7.5 L1–3 years | 1,200 |

Read the table two ways. First, the analyst titles pay more than the MIS titles at the same experience, so if an MIS role is what you can get, take it as a way in and keep building SQL and Power BI. Second, AmbitionBox has no under-one-year band for most titles, and its Data Analyst fresher band rests on only 30 salaries, so use these as a guide, not a promise. And remember they’re yearly CTC: monthly in-hand pay is lower once PF and tax are taken out.
Search strings that find them
On each job portal, set an alert for each of these, filtered to 0–1 year of experience and to posts from the last week: “Data Analyst fresher”, “Junior Data Analyst”, “Associate Analyst”, “Reporting Analyst”, “MIS Analyst”, “Business Analyst fresher”, “Analyst trainee” and “Data Analyst intern”. Intern roles count too: a good internship can turn into the job itself.
Where are entry-level data analyst jobs posted?
In five places, and you should use all five every week: job portals, company career pages, global capability centres, referrals, and hiring tests or drives.
| Where | Why it works | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Job portalsNaukri, LinkedIn, Indeed and the government’s National Career Service | The widest range of openings, with experience filters | One alert per title; apply within a day or two of a post going up |
| Company career pages | No middleman, and roles that never reach a portal | Keep a list of 25 employers of analysts in your region: banks and insurers, e-commerce, IT services, consulting and analytics firms; check it every week |
| Global capability centres (GCCs) | The in-house tech and analytics centres of global companies, many of them in Indian cities | Add the GCCs in your nearest big city to your list, and watch their graduate and analyst openings |
| Referrals | A person vouching for you gets your resume read | Ask seniors from your college and people in your city, with one project link and the job ID |
| Hiring tests and drives | Off-campus drives and online assessments that companies announce for freshers | Prepare for timed SQL, Excel and aptitude rounds before the dates are announced |
GCCs deserve the attention. NASSCOM counts 2,117 of them in India, employing 2.36 million people.4 In September 2026, Naukri saw GCC hiring rise 4% on the year, led by Hyderabad (+23%), Chennai (+13%) and Pune (+11%).1
Cities differ, too. In TeamLease EdTech’s survey, 89% of employers in Bengaluru intended to hire freshers in July–December 2026, against 75% in Mumbai, 71% in Chennai, 60% in Hyderabad, 49% in Delhi and 41% in Pune.2 If you’re in a tier-2 or tier-3 city, our off-campus plan covers applying from anywhere.
One rule for every channel: a real employer never charges you to apply or to join. The government’s National Career Service tells jobseekers not to pay fees to employers.6 If an offer asks for money, read our guide to fake job offers before you reply.
What do fresher data analyst posts ask for?
SQL and Excel first, then a dashboard tool, Python and basic statistics, plus the habit of using AI and checking its answers. AmbitionBox lists SQL, Excel, Power BI, Python, data visualisation and Tableau among the top skills for Data Analysts, and SQL, Excel and data visualisation for Junior Data Analysts.3
| Skill | How posts phrase it | The proof to show |
|---|---|---|
| SQL | “Writing queries”, joins, MySQL or PostgreSQL | Ten business questions answered in SQL, one with a window function |
| Excel | “Advanced Excel”, lookups, PivotTables | A one-sheet Excel dashboard with slicers |
| Power BI or Tableau | Dashboards, DAX, data modelling | A one-page report on Indian public data |
| Python | Python, pandas, data cleaning | A messy file cleaned and summarised in a notebook |
| Statistics | Statistics, A/B testing | One claim tested, explained in two plain lines |
| AI at work | AI tools, Copilot, GenAI | One project where you used AI and checked every number it gave |
If you’re still learning these, learn them in that order, about 10 hours a week, with a project at each step.
A portfolio that gets replies
Three finished projects beat ten half-done ones. Each should answer a business question, on real data, with a clear finding in plain words, and each should be one click from your resume.
- A dashboard in Power BI on Indian public data from data.gov.in, ending with three findings a manager could act on.
- A SQL analysis of a sales or payments dataset: ten questions, ten answers, each in a sentence.
- A Python notebook that cleans a messy dataset and tests one claim with statistics.
Put each on GitHub with a README: the question, the data and its source, what you found and what you’d do next. Then write each one on your resume as a result, not a task. Compare “Made a dashboard in Power BI” with “Built a Power BI dashboard of air quality in five Indian cities from public data; found the city whose pollution fell most, and when.” The second gets read. Our list of 15 projects on Indian public data has ideas with checked dataset links.
On our program, the capstones are this step, each with a cheat sheet that sets out the process: 5 on Go, 10 on Plus and all 25 on Infinity, with 5 submitted in a 15-day capstone period (on Go, all five). See them on the curriculum.
The application routine
About 45 minutes a day, five days a week, and a review every four weeks. A pace you can keep for months beats a burst you can’t.
- Search your saved alerts and the career pages on your list.
- Shortlist three posts where you have most of the listed skills.
- Tailor the top third of your resume to each post: its title, its three main skills and the project that proves them.
- Apply the same day.
- Send one referral message (a template is below).
- Log it in a sheet: date, company, title, where you found it, and the reply.
A referral message to adapt: “Hi [name], I’m a [degree] graduate from [college], applying for the [title] role at [company] (job ID [number]). I built [one project, one line] and it’s here: [link]. If you think I’d fit, would you be willing to refer me? Thank you for reading.” Short, specific, and easy to say yes to.
Every four weeks, read your numbers
| What you see | What it usually means | What to change |
|---|---|---|
| Few replies to many applications | Your resume doesn’t match the posts | Mirror each post’s main skills in the top third; lead with projects |
| Tests, but no interviews after them | Speed in SQL or Excel | 30 timed SQL questions a week, PivotTables from memory |
| Interviews, but no offers | How you explain your work | Explain each project in two minutes, out loud; record a mock interview |
Interviews for fresher analyst roles usually run in a few rounds: an online test, a technical round on your SQL and projects, a case or business round, and HR. Practise with our SQL interview questions. On our program, mock interviews with a career counsellor start once you complete.
