Key takeaways
- AICTE’s National Internship Portal calls AI/ML and data its most-applied domain of 2026, and says registration, applications and the completion certificate cost a student ₹0.1
- On AmbitionBox, Data Science Interns with under a year report ₹2.7–3 lakh a year, about ₹22,500–25,000 a month (3,400 salaries, read 22 Oct 2026).2
- Google Summer of Code pays open-source contributors in India $750, $1,500 or $3,000, depending on the project’s size.3
- Employers are leaning on internships: NASSCOM and Indeed found an increased focus on them to build talent pipelines, and 40% of employers preferring demonstrable AI skills or certifications over degrees.4
- Never pay for an internship. AICTE says anyone who asks you to pay to apply through its portal is running a scam.1
How do students get a data science internship?
By applying through official portals, company pages and referrals, and by showing work before anyone asks for it: a dashboard, a notebook or an open-source contribution that proves you can do the job. Internships are competitive, so the proof matters more than the number of applications.
A data science internship is a short, supervised stint of real data work that a student does before graduating. Competition is real: the government’s own internship portal calls AI/ML and data the most-applied domain of 2026.1 But employers want interns, and want proof. NASSCOM and Indeed found organisations adopting skills-focused hiring alongside an increased focus on internships to build their talent pipeline.4 In TeamLease EdTech’s survey of 1,097 employers, internships, portfolios, assessments and real projects were gaining weight alongside degrees.5
So the plan is simple to say and takes work to do: apply widely through the right doors, and carry one finished project that matches the internship you want. If replies are few, improve the project before sending fifty more applications.
Where do data science internships come from?
From seven places: three to apply through every week, two to approach directly, and two that build proof while you apply.
| Where | What it is | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| National Internship PortalAICTE, Ministry of Education | The government’s internship portal, for AICTE, UGC, IGNOU and other students, with an AI and data science stream; free for students1 | Make one profile and apply inside the portal; each posting declares its stipend upfront1 |
| PM Internship SchemeMinistry of Corporate Affairs | The Government of India’s internship scheme, with its own portal | Check the current eligibility, the companies and the monthly payment on the portal itself |
| Company and GCC career pages | Summer, winter and graduate internships at banks, IT services, global capability centres, consulting and product companies | Search their careers pages for “intern” with “data”, “analytics” or “AI”, two to three months before your break |
| Startups | Small teams with real data and little time | Email the founder or data lead with a one-page analysis of something public about their market |
| Professors and research labs | Research internships in your college or at other institutes | Read a professor’s recent paper, then write with one specific idea you could work on |
| Google Summer of Code | A global online program that brings new contributors into open source, for people aged 18 or over who are students or beginners to open source6 | Projects run to about 90, 175 or 350 hours; start with a small fix in an open-source project you use6 |
| Hackathons and competitions | Smart India Hackathon, for students of higher education institutions, organised with AICTE and the Ministry of Education;7 Kaggle competitions | Finish one, write it up, and put it on your resume as experience |
Referrals work for internships too. A senior from your college who interned somewhere can tell you when applications open and pass your resume on; ask with one project link and a specific role in mind.
What do data science interns earn?
It varies by employer, city and length, so treat any single number as a guide. On AmbitionBox, Data Science Interns with under a year’s experience report ₹2.7–3 lakh a year, about ₹22,500–25,000 a month, and Data Analyst Interns ₹2.6–2.9 lakh.2

AmbitionBox’s figures are what people with these titles report, so they describe paid internships, not every posting. Check each posting’s stipend before you apply. And judge an internship by the work as well as the money: real data, a named mentor and a project you can show can matter more on your resume than a few thousand rupees.
What our Infinity plan’s internships pay, in the words of our FAQ:
Three paid internships after you complete. Each runs for 30 days, together with Skillcept Online and a multinational partner company, which gives you its internship certificate and a signed letter of recommendation (LOR). The work happens only during your live-class hours (Saturday and Sunday, 11 AM to 2 PM IST), so it suits working professionals too, and each pays a stipend of at least ₹7,500. An internship never makes the main fee payable.
- 3 internships of 30 days, each with a signed LOR
- Only in your live-class hours
- A stipend of at least ₹7,500 each

How do you stand out with no experience?
Show the work before anyone asks for it. When many students apply for the same role, the one with a finished project that matches the internship, a clean one-page resume and a short, specific message is the one most likely to get a reply.
- Week 1: pick one question and one dataset. Choose public data from data.gov.in, India’s open government data platform, on a topic the internships you want care about: payments, prices, health or air quality.
- Week 2: do the analysis. Clean the data in Python, answer the question, and build a one-page dashboard in Power BI or Tableau.
- Week 3: publish it. Put it on GitHub with a README: the question, the data and its source, what you found and what you’d do next.
- Week 4: apply. Ten tailored applications and five emails to startups or labs, each with your project link in the first two lines.
Match the skills to the role. AmbitionBox lists Python, SQL, data visualisation and machine learning among the top skills for Data Science Interns, and SQL, Excel and data visualisation for Data Analyst Interns.2 For a data science internship, add one small machine learning model to your project; for an analyst internship, add a SQL analysis.
Two kinds of proof that read as experience
An open-source contribution. Data libraries publish guides for new contributors: pandas and scikit-learn both explain how to start, and a documentation fix is a real first contribution. A finished competition. A Kaggle notebook or a hackathon entry, written up with what you tried and what worked, shows you can finish under a deadline.
An email to a startup, to adapt: “Hi [name], I’m a [year] [degree] student at [college]. I looked at [public data about their market] and found [one finding, one line]; the dashboard is here: [link]. I’d love to do work like this for [company] as an intern this [summer or winter]. Could we talk for ten minutes?” One finding, one link, one ask.
Red flags: “internships” you pay for
If you pay, it isn’t an internship. An internship pays you, or at least costs you nothing. A “virtual internship” that charges a registration, training, kit or certificate fee is a course, and should be judged as one, contract in hand.
- A fee to start, called registration, training, a kit or a certificate. The government’s National Career Service tells jobseekers not to pay fees to employers.8
- Someone asking you to pay to apply through AICTE’s portal. AICTE says that’s a scam, and asks you to report it to internship@aicte-india.org.1
- A stipend that starts only after you pay a deposit or buy a course.
- A certificate promised in a week, with no real work, mentor or interview.
- An offer on WhatsApp with no interview, from a free email address.
The Home Ministry’s job-fraud brochure puts the rule plainly: no organisation asks for money to work for it.9 Our guide to fake job offers and placement scams shows how to check an offer and where to report one.
How does an internship become a job?
Treat it as a long interview. Deliver one piece of work the team actually uses, write down what you did, and ask early what it takes to convert. A conversion offer is often called a pre-placement offer (PPO): a job offer made to an intern before campus placements or graduation.
- In week one, ask your manager what a good result looks like by the end.
- Every week, send a short note: what you did, what you found, what’s next.
- Finish one thing completely rather than starting five.
- In the last two weeks, ask whether there’s a path to a full-time role, or a referral to one.
- Before you leave, ask for a letter of recommendation, and for permission to describe your project on your resume.
Even without an offer, the internship goes on your resume as a result, not a task. When you’re ready for full-time roles, our guide to data analyst jobs for freshers shows the titles to search and where they’re posted, and our 15 projects on Indian public data give you more to show.
