The short answer
Choose by the work you’d enjoy, then by the path you can walk from where you are. Here is each role in one line:
- A Data Analyst turns a company’s data into answers about what happened, where and why, using SQL, Excel and dashboards in Power BI.
- A Data Scientist uses data to predict and decide: models that forecast demand, flag fraud or say which customers will leave, tested with statistics.
- An AI Engineer builds products on top of AI models: assistants that answer from a company’s documents, agents that complete tasks, and the systems that test and run them.
- Want a job soonest? Aim for analyst roles.
- Enjoy maths and experiments? Aim for Data Scientist.
- Like building software, at the AI end? Aim for AI Engineer.
The three stack: a Data Scientist uses an analyst’s SQL and statistics, and an AI Engineer uses a Data Scientist’s machine learning, so no step is wasted.

Where demand is going
Demand is moving to roles that combine data with AI. Generic analyst work is shrinking, and AI roles are growing fastest, though they hire fewer beginners.
Data Analysts
Data and analytics postings on Indeed fell 14% in the three months to July 2026.5 In the same market, 39% of data and analytics postings in India mention AI.6 The analysts being hired use Python and AI tools, and check what the AI gives them.
Data Scientists
The World Economic Forum lists big data specialists and AI and machine learning specialists among India’s fastest-growing roles to 2030.9 On Naukri, AI/ML hiring rose 20% on the year in September 2026, and fresher AI/ML hiring 19%.8
AI Engineers
AI Engineer was number two on LinkedIn’s Jobs on the Rise list for India in 2026,4 and LinkedIn found AI engineering job postings up 59.5% in a year.7 The catch is experience: in foundit’s data, roles open to people with 0–3 years were 18% of AI jobs in 2025.14 On this path, an analyst or data science job first, or strong projects, make the difference. On Infinity, our plan for this role, the 3 paid 30-day internships after you complete add work experience too.
How to choose, by background
Start from where you are. The best first target is the one you can reach soonest without closing the door to the next.
A fresher, from any college
Aim first for Data Analyst or Junior Data Scientist roles. In September 2026, fresher AI/ML hiring on Naukri rose 19% while fresher hiring overall rose 1%,8 so freshers who add machine learning to SQL and Python widen their options. If you studied computer science and enjoy building software, AI Engineer is within reach; plan on strong projects to stand in for the experience most AI jobs ask for. Start with our Data Scientist roadmap.
Switching from a non-IT field
Aim for Data Analyst or Data Scientist roles in the field you know: finance analytics after commerce, healthcare data after pharmacy, operations data after engineering. Your domain is your edge in interviews. Of the learners we placed, 46% came from a non-tech degree. Records on file.
Working in IT
If you already code, in testing, support or development, Data Scientist or AI Engineer is the natural target. In September 2026, IT hiring on Naukri fell 4% on the year while AI/ML hiring inside IT rose 11%.8 Our AI Engineer roadmap shows where you can join it.
Working outside IT
From sales, finance or operations, aim for Data Analyst roles in your own function first, then Data Scientist. You bring something a fresher can’t: knowing which questions the business actually asks.
Back from a career break
Aim for analyst roles first: the shortest path, and recent projects show your skills are current. That matters: an Ashoka University study found women who had taken a career break got 49% fewer callbacks than similar women who hadn’t.15 Two or three fresh projects on GitHub answer the question before it’s asked. Start with our Data Analyst roadmap.
How they map to our plans
Our Data Science & AI Job Guarantee Program has three plans, one for each role. Every plan teaches the 6 core modules; they differ in how far into AI they go, the interviews they assure and the salary a job must pay before any fee after placement is due.
| Plan | For | Modules | Minimum salary assured | Interviews assured |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Go | Data Analyst roles | 1–7, at your pace | ₹6 LPA | 30 |
| Plus | Data Scientist roles | 1–8, at your pace | ₹9 LPA or your salary + 35%, whichever is higher | 100 |
| Infinity | AI/ML Engineer roles | All 10, live on weekends | ₹12 LPA or your salary + 85%, whichever is higher | Unlimited until hired |
Interviews start once you complete the program: the 6 core modules, 5 capstones in 15 days, the competency test and signing within 30 days (on Infinity, also 75% live-class attendance). In the words of our FAQ:
The line your job’s pay must clear before anything is due after placement: ₹6 LPA on Go; ₹9 LPA or your salary + 35%, whichever is higher, on Plus; and ₹12 LPA or your salary + 85%, whichever is higher, on Infinity. A job below it never starts the fee. The salary option uses the fixed pay on your last 3 payslips when you complete, if it’s ₹25 LPA or less and you share them.
- Measured on fixed annual pay
- Below it, the fee never starts
- A threshold, not a salary promise

Questions
Which is better for a fresher, Data Analyst or Data Scientist?
Data Analyst is the quicker way in; Data Scientist pays more with experience. On AmbitionBox (16 Oct 2026), Data Scientists with 1–3 years earn ₹11.3–12.5 lakh a year against ₹5.2–5.7 lakh for analysts, so starting as an analyst and adding machine learning is a route the pay bands reward.
Who earns more, a Data Scientist or an AI Engineer?
They’re close. On AmbitionBox, Data Scientists earn ₹11.3–12.5 lakh with 1–3 years and ₹15–16.6 lakh with 3–6 years; AI Engineers earn ₹10.4–11.5 lakh and ₹15.3–16.9 lakh (15–16 Oct 2026). The bigger gap is between either role and analysts.
Can a Data Analyst become an AI Engineer?
Yes. An analyst already has SQL, data cleaning and business sense. The path adds Python engineering, machine learning, deep learning, LLMs, RAG and agents, about 6–7 months at 10 hours a week if you already use Python.
Which role needs the most coding?
AI Engineer: Python and software engineering every day. Data Scientists also code in Python and SQL daily. Data Analysts need SQL; Python helps, but much analyst work runs in Excel and Power BI.
Which of the three has the most demand in 2026?
AI roles are growing fastest: AI Engineer was number two on LinkedIn’s Jobs on the Rise list for India in 2026, and AI/ML hiring on Naukri rose 20% in September 2026. Generic data and analytics postings on Indeed fell 14% in the three months to July 2026, so analysts who also use AI are the ones in demand.
