Is data science a good career for my child? A guide for parents.

Yes, for a child who enjoys numbers and solving problems and is willing to keep learning: demand for data and AI skills is growing in India, and pay rises quickly with experience. But employers hire on skills they can test, so the route matters more than the label; here is what the jobs are, what they pay, the routes after Class 12, and what to check before you pay for any course.

Key takeaways

  • Demand is moving to data and AI: in September 2026, AI/ML hiring on Naukri rose 20% on the year while white-collar hiring overall rose 2%, and fresher hiring in AI/ML rose 19%.1
  • The World Economic Forum names Big Data Specialists and AI and Machine Learning Specialists among India’s fastest-growing jobs to 2030.2
  • Pay grows fast with experience: Data Analysts earn ₹5.2–5.7 lakh a year with 1–3 years, and Data Scientists ₹15–16.6 lakh with 3–6 years (AmbitionBox, read 22 Oct 2026).3
  • Skills count more than the degree’s name: 40% of employers prefer demonstrable AI skills or certifications over degrees (NASSCOM and Indeed, May 2026).4
  • Before paying for any course, read the contract: India’s rules on coaching ads have covered misleading claims about selections and job security since 13 Nov 2024.5

Is data science a good career in 2026?

Yes, if your child likes working with numbers and questions, and accepts that the learning never quite stops. The data science and AI jobs growing fastest now need AI skills and proof of work, not only a degree, so the right preparation matters more than the college’s name.

What the work is

Data science is the work of turning data into decisions. A Data Analyst answers business questions with Excel, SQL and dashboards: which city’s sales fell last month, and why. A Data Scientist builds models that predict: which customers are likely to leave. An AI Engineer builds AI products, such as an assistant that answers customers from a company’s own documents. Many people start as analysts and grow from there.

It isn’t data entry. Typing data in is shrinking: the World Economic Forum lists Data Entry Clerks among the fastest-declining jobs worldwide, while the analysis and AI roles are among the fastest-growing.2

What the hiring data says

In September 2026, AI/ML hiring on Naukri grew 20% on the year, while white-collar hiring overall grew 2%. Fresher hiring in AI/ML grew 19%.1 The World Economic Forum’s employer survey names Big Data Specialists and AI and Machine Learning Specialists among India’s fastest-growing roles.2 And employers are changing how they hire: in a NASSCOM and Indeed study, 86% of employers had seen some impact of AI on job roles, and 40% preferred demonstrable AI skills or certifications over degrees.4

The honest part

Getting the first job is the hard part. Overall fresher hiring on Naukri rose just 1% in September 2026.1 Urban youth unemployment was 13.6% in 2025,6 and the India Skills Report 2026 found 56.35% of the graduates it tested employable.7 Employers increasingly hire on skills they can test, such as SQL, Python, a dashboard tool and statistics, and on projects a candidate can explain,4 which is why the preparation matters more than the degree’s name.

From our records: of the learners we placed in 2025, 46% came from a non-tech degree and 24% were freshers, with no work experience. Records on file.

What do data science and AI jobs pay in India?

On AmbitionBox, Data Analysts with under a year’s experience report ₹3.5–5.2 lakh a year, from a small sample, and pay grows quickly: with 3–6 years, Data Analysts earn ₹7.2–7.9 lakh and Data Scientists ₹15–16.6 lakh.3

What are the routes after Class 12, or after a degree?

There are four common routes, and all of them end in the same place: skills an employer can test, and projects to show. Choose by what your child enjoys, and by how much time and money the route needs.

RouteSuitsAdd along the way
A degree in data science, statistics, mathematics, computer applications or computer scienceA child who enjoys maths and wants the theoryA project every year, and an internship before the final year
Any degree (B.Com, BBA, BA, B.Sc), with skills alongsideA child set on commerce, arts or another scienceExcel, SQL, Power BI, Python and statistics from the second year, and three finished projects
Skills after the degreeA graduate still looking for the right first jobA structured program, or a self-study plan with deadlines and practice tests
A switch from a first jobA young professional in another fieldAbout 10 hours a week of study alongside the job

A degree in data science isn’t required. In India, 30% of employers expect skills-based hiring, which drops degree requirements, to be effective, against 19% worldwide (World Economic Forum).2 If your child does choose a degree, check each college’s own eligibility first: some programs ask for mathematics in Class 12.

Does my child need to be good at maths?

Comfortable, not brilliant. Analysts use averages, percentages, spread and probability every day, and data scientists add more statistics. All of it can be learned through examples. On our program, Module 2 covers probability and statistics in about 10 hours; the curriculum shows every module.

A free test before you pay anything

Ask your child to spend two weeks on a free, official course: The Python Tutorial on python.org, or the short courses on Kaggle Learn. If they enjoy it and finish, that’s a good sign. If they don’t, you’ve lost nothing.

Who can join our program, in the words of our FAQ:

Anyone aged 18 to 55 who has passed Class 12 (or an equivalent) and wants a career in data science and AI: freshers, career switchers, working professionals and people coming back after a break. There’s no CGPA cut-off and no degree filter.

What should you check before paying for any course?

Read the contract, not the advertisement. Before you pay, get in writing what you pay before a job, whether a loan or a lender is involved, which jobs count as a placement, the minimum salary, and when and how money comes back.

AskA good answer
Is this a loan? Is a bank or finance company involved? No lender, no credit check and no interest, written into the contract.
What do we pay before a job?A stated amount, GST included, and what happens to it.
When does that money come back?Conditions your child can meet, and a deadline in days.
Which jobs count as a placement?Full-time jobs in the field, with a minimum salary in writing.
What if my child isn’t placed?A clear answer on what is owed and by when.
What if my child stops midway?A plain answer on what comes back and what doesn’t.
Can we read the full agreement first?Yes, before you pay anything.
Where do we pay?Only through the company’s own checkout, never to a person’s UPI ID.

The law is on your side. India’s Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has applied guidelines on coaching ads since 13 November 2024, covering misleading claims about selections, ranks and job security, and false urgency.5 It has acted on them: by March 2025, it had imposed ₹77.6 lakh in penalties on 24 coaching institutes.8 So treat a claim that everyone gets placed, or pressure to pay today, as a reason to slow down.

If a program doesn’t keep its word, the National Consumer Helpline (1915) can help. Through it, the Department of Consumer Affairs got ₹1.56 crore refunded to more than 600 students in the education sector.9 For the full checklist, read our 12 questions to ask before you pay, and share our guide to fake job offers and placement scams with your child.

How does pay after placement protect a family?

It moves the risk away from the family. There’s no loan, the registration comes back when your child completes, and the main fee is paid only from the salary of a qualifying job. That’s our Data Science & AI Job Guarantee Program: not placed after completing the program? You pay ₹0.

What parents worry aboutHow our program handles it
A loan, or the credit scoreNo lender, bank or finance company, no credit check, and nothing reported to credit bureaus.
Paying before a jobOnly a registration today. It comes back in full, GST included, within 15 working days of signing, once your child completes.
A job that pays too littleThe main fee starts only after a qualifying job that pays at least the plan’s minimum salary assured: ₹6 LPA on Go; ₹9 LPA or their salary + 35%, whichever is higher, on Plus; ₹12 LPA or their salary + 85%, whichever is higher, on Infinity.
No job after completingIf they don’t accept a qualifying job within 12 months of signing, the main fee is never due, and they keep the registration refund.
Calls to the familyAbout payments, we contact only the learner: never their employer, family or friends, and never through a collection agent.

Completing the program means the 6 core modules, 5 capstones in 15 days, the competency test and signing within 30 days (on Infinity, also 75% live-class attendance). The minimum salary assured is a threshold for the fee, not a salary promise: employers make every hiring decision. Here is the loan question, in the words of our FAQ:

No. There’s no lender, bank or finance company: you pay us, for our own training, in 9 fixed payments, and only after you start earning. No credit check, no interest, and nothing is reported to credit bureaus; we never sell or pass your payments to a lender without your written consent. The amount is fixed, never a share of your salary, and paying early never costs more.

  • No lender, bank or interest
  • No credit check or credit bureau
  • A fixed amount, never a share of your salary

And the part every parent should know before paying, if your child stops before completing:

Your registration reserves your place from the day you pay (on Infinity, one of your batch’s limited seats), so it comes back only when you complete. If you cancel or stop, even before your access starts, or don’t complete within your completion window, it isn’t refunded and the ₹0 promise doesn’t apply; a payment made with “Pay once” isn’t refunded either. You keep the core modules, and you owe nothing after placement. If serious illness or something beyond your control stops you, write to us with proof: we may extend your window, and on Infinity you can use Pause & Play. Money taken by mistake (paid twice, or a failed payment that left your account) always comes back.

  • Your place is held from the day you pay
  • You keep the core modules
  • More time if illness stops you

Questions

Is data science a good career for my child in India?

Yes, for a child who enjoys numbers and problem-solving. AI/ML hiring on Naukri grew 20% on the year in September 2026, and the World Economic Forum names Big Data and AI and Machine Learning Specialists among India’s fastest-growing jobs. The first job is the hard part, so skills and projects matter more than the degree’s name.

Can my child do data science after Class 12 without engineering?

Yes. Routes after Class 12 include a degree in data science, statistics, mathematics or computer applications, or any degree with SQL, Python and Power BI learned alongside. Of the learners we placed in 2025, 46% came from a non-tech degree. Records on file.

Does data science need very strong maths?

No. Analysts need comfort with averages, percentages, probability and basic statistics, and data scientists add more statistics. All of it can be learned through examples, without advanced college maths.

Will AI replace data science jobs?

The work is changing rather than disappearing. In September 2026, AI/ML hiring on Naukri grew 20% while white-collar hiring grew 2%, and NASSCOM and Indeed found 86% of employers had seen some impact of AI on job roles. Data skills combined with AI skills are what employers are hiring for.

How do we know if a data science course is genuine?

Ask for the contract before paying: whether a loan is involved, what you pay before a job, which jobs count, the minimum salary and when money comes back, all in writing. Be wary of claims that everyone gets placed, and pay only through the company’s own checkout.

What does a data scientist earn in India?

On AmbitionBox (read 22 Oct 2026), Data Scientists earn ₹11.3–12.5 lakh a year with 1–3 years’ experience and ₹15–16.6 lakh with 3–6 years. Many first jobs in data science carry another title, such as Data Analyst, which AmbitionBox shows at ₹3.5–5.2 lakh with under a year’s experience, from a small sample.
