What is perplexity, and what do benchmarks such as MMLU, HumanEval, BIG-bench and HELM measure?
Perplexity is the exponential of the average negative log-likelihood per token on held-out text: lower means the model predicts it better. It depends on the tokeniser, so compare only like with like, and it isn’t well defined for masked models such as BERT. MMLU tests knowledge across 57 subjects; HumanEval checks whether generated code passes unit tests; BIG-bench gathers 204 tasks from 450 authors; HELM scores models on 7 metrics, from accuracy and calibration to robustness, fairness and efficiency.
